Brainstorming with AI is one of the most useful things a student can do - and one of the most misunderstood. Some students avoid it entirely out of fear. Some use it in ways that cross the line. Most are just confused about where the line actually is.
Here is what it looks like in practice to use AI for brainstorming without it becoming academic misconduct.
Brainstorming With AI Is Not the Same as Cheating With AI
Think about how you would brainstorm with a study partner. You throw out ideas, push back on each other, ask what if we argued this instead - and then go write your own essay. AI brainstorming is exactly that process. You get ideas. You go write.
The moment you paste the AI output into your submission - or have it write sentences you will use directly - you have moved from brainstorming to using AI as a ghostwriter. Those are different things.

How to Document It So No One Can Question You
Keep a short log of what you asked AI during brainstorming. Something like: Asked ChatGPT for topic angles on X. Chose angle 3 and developed my own argument. This takes 20 seconds and gives you something to show if the question ever comes up.
If your professor requires disclosure of any AI use, add a brief note to your submission. A professor who allows AI for brainstorming will appreciate the transparency. One who does not will at least know you were honest.
