The 5-step 7-point DBQ blueprint

1

Open with a 4-sentence Contextualization "Star Wars Crawl" (1 pt)

Before your thesis, write 3–4 sentences explaining the broader historical developments in the 20–50 years leading up to the prompt's time period, then connect it to your thesis.

2

Use the "Although X, because A and B, therefore Y" Thesis formula (1 pt)

A defensible thesis must take a clear, historically specific stand with a counter-argument (X) and two analytical categories (A and B) that establish a line of reasoning.

3

Group at least 6 documents into 2 or 3 argument buckets (2 pts)

Never summarize documents in numerical order ("Doc 1 says... Doc 2 says..."). Group documents by theme (e.g., Political vs. Economic) and use them to prove your topic sentence.

4

Perform HIPP Sourcing on at least 4 documents (1 pt)

Explain HOW or WHY the document's Historical situation, Intended audience, Purpose, or Point of view is relevant to your argument (do 4 documents so you have a safety buffer).

5

Drop 2 specific pieces of Outside Evidence + Complexity (2 pts)

Name a specific law, treaty, movement, or court case not mentioned in the documents and explain how it proves your thesis. Under the updated rubric, using all 7 docs or 4 HIPP analyses also earns Complexity!

🔍

HIPP Sourcing Workouts

Practice analyzing primary source excerpts for Author POV and Historical Situation.

Never quote long passages from the DBQ documents

AP graders already know what the documents say—quoting two lines of text wastes your writing time and earns zero analysis credit. Paraphrase the core idea in 10 words and cite "(Doc 3)".
