Stop hunting for fancy literary devices. AP English graders reward Commentary.
On the 6-point AP Lang and AP Lit rubric, 4 out of 6 points come from Evidence & Commentary. Here is how to build a bulletproof line of reasoning.
The 5-step AP Lang & AP Lit 6-point essay framework
Write a defensible Thesis that pairs Device/Choice with Meaning/Purpose (1 pt)
Never write "The author uses imagery, tone, and diction to convey their message." Instead, name the specific rhetorical move and the exact effect on the audience or theme.
Divide the passage chronologically into Beginning, Middle, and End shifts
Instead of dedicating one paragraph to "diction" and one to "syntax," organize your essay around how the speaker's argument or the poem's tension shifts from start to finish.
Follow the 1:3 Quote-to-Commentary Ratio (4 pts)
Embed short 3-to-6-word micro-quotes inside your own sentences, then spend at least 3 sentences unpacking WHY that word choice works and HOW it advances the thesis.
For AP Lit Q3: Build deep "Major Works Data Sheets" on 4 versatile novels/plays
Know 4 rich works inside and out (e.g., Hamlet, Frankenstein, Beloved, The Great Gatsby) so you can cite character foils, structural turning points, and motifs without plot-dumping.
Earn the Sophistication point through tension, nuance, or broader context (1 pt)
Earned not from thesaurus words, but from exploring complexities, irony, alternative interpretations, or why a rhetorical choice was risky for that specific historical audience.
