ACT Science isn't a science test. It's an open-book "Where's Waldo?" with graphs.
90% of the answers are sitting right on the axes of Table 1 and Figure 2. Reading the dense background paragraphs first is the #1 reason students run out of time.
The 5-step ACT Science 34+ speed system
Skip the passage intro on Data & Experiment passages—go straight to Question 1
On 5 of the 6 passages, reading the wall of text first wastes 90 seconds per passage. Jump straight to the questions and let the question tell you where to look.
Circle the 3 "Locators" in every question stem
Underline: (1) Which Figure/Table/Experiment ("According to Figure 2..."), (2) Which X-axis / column variable ("at 40°C..."), and (3) Which Y-axis / units you are reading.
Draw arrows (↑ or ↓) next to direct and inverse trends
When a question asks "As depth increases from 10m to 50m, pressure...", physically trace the line with your finger or cursor before looking at the answer choices so you don't flip the direction.
Save the "Conflicting Viewpoints" (Scientist 1 vs. Scientist 2) passage for last
The 1 all-text passage takes the longest. Read the last sentence of the intro (the core question), then underline the 1-sentence thesis of Scientist 1, Scientist 2, and Scientist 3.
Lock in the 8 Outside-Knowledge Science Facts the ACT actually tests
You only need basic facts: pH (<7 acidic, 7 neutral, >7 basic), Photosynthesis vs. Cellular Respiration inputs/outputs, Mitosis vs. Meiosis, Dominant/Recessive alleles, Density = m/V, and protons (+) attract electrons (-).
How to drill ACT Science skills with our ACT Prep Expert
Interpolation & Extrapolation Drills
Practice estimating values between plotted points and extending curves beyond the graph.
Experimental Controls & Variables
Identify the independent variable (what the scientist changed) vs. the control group.
Conflicting Viewpoints Mapping
Summarize where Scientist 1 and Scientist 2 agree and disagree in 20 seconds.
Outside-Knowledge Mini-Quizzes
Drill the 10–12 recurring biology, chemistry, and physics facts tested on the last question of a passage.
Watch out for mismatched units and Dual Y-Axes!
The ACT loves putting Temperature on the left Y-axis and Pressure on the right Y-axis—or giving Table 1 in millimeters and asking the question in centimeters. Always check the axis label before picking your answer.
