MCAT science passages look like PhD papers—until you translate them into basic freshman concepts.
AAMC loves hiding a simple amino acid charge or Ohm's Law question inside a terrifying 5-paragraph oncology experiment. Here is how to strip away the camouflage.
The 5-step MCAT B/B & C/P 130+ passage decoding system
Map protein cascades with quick shorthand arrows (A → B ⊣ C)
When a Bio/Biochem passage throws 6 unfamiliar protein acronyms at you (e.g., "Upregulation of X21 phosphorylates Y4, inhibiting Z9"), draw a 5-second arrow chain on your scratch pad so you don't lose the direction.
Read Figures by checking ONLY Axes, WT Control, and Asterisks (*)
Don't spend 3 minutes analyzing every bar in Figure 1–3 before reading the questions. When a question references Figure 2, compare the Wild-Type (WT) / vehicle control against the mutant / drug treatment and look for * (p < 0.05).
Master Lab Techniques cold (SNOW DROP, PAGE, PCR, ELISA, Chromatography)
Know Southern (DNA), Northern (RNA), Western (Protein); Native vs. Reducing vs. Non-Reducing SDS-PAGE; RT-qPCR; and Size-Exclusion vs. Ion-Exchange vs. Affinity chromatography.
Use Scientific Notation + SI Units to solve Chem/Phys math without a calculator
Convert every number into scientific notation before multiplying (e.g., 300 nm = 3 × 10⁻⁷ m). And remember: knowing that Watts = Joules/sec = Volts × Amps lets you derive half of C/P formulas from the answer choice units!
Review every FL practice test by tagging "Content Gap" vs. "Passage Misread"
After each full-length exam, use our Biology or Chemistry Tutor to turn every missed concept into a 2-sentence mechanism card.
Highest-yield MCAT B/B & C/P topics to drill with AI
Amino Acids & Enzyme Kinetics
Guaranteed 8–12 questions per MCAT on 1-letter codes, pI, and Km/Vmax.
Blots, Gels & Experimental Design
Interpret bands on Reducing vs. Non-Reducing SDS-PAGE (disulfide bonds!).
Electrochemistry, Acids/Bases & Circuits
Galvanic cells, Henderson-Hasselbalch, capacitor/resistor networks, and Doppler.
Optics, Fluids & Radioactive Decay
Converging/diverging lenses (1/f = 1/o + 1/i), Bernoulli, and half-lives.
Look at the Answer Choice exponents first on MCAT Chem/Phys calculations
If the four answer choices are 1.5 × 10², 1.5 × 10⁴, 1.5 × 10⁶, and 1.5 × 10⁸, don't waste time multiplying the decimals—just track the powers of 10 and SI prefixes (milli = 10⁻³, micro = 10⁻⁶, nano = 10⁻⁹)!
