AP Statistics is a writing exam disguised as a math class.
Your TI-84 calculator does the math in 5 seconds. Earning a 5 comes down to checking conditions and writing air-tight contextual interpretations.
The 5-step AP Statistics 5-score rubric system
Describe every distribution using SOCV + Context
When asked to describe a histogram, boxplot, or stemplot, always state Shape, Outliers, Center (median/mean), and Variability (IQR/SD) using the exact real-world variable name and units.
Build a decision tree to pick the exact right Inference Test
Ask two questions first: Is the data Categorical (Proportions → z-test or Chi-Square) or Quantitative (Means → t-test)? Then count how many samples and populations are involved.
Follow STATE – PLAN – DO – CONCLUDE on every inference FRQ
STATE hypotheses and define parameters in context (never use p̂ or x̄ in hypotheses!); PLAN by naming the test and checking Random, 10%, and Normal/Large Counts; DO the test statistic + p-value; CONCLUDE in context.
Memorize the exact P-Value and Confidence Level sentence templates
P-value: "Assuming Ho is true, there is a [p-value] probability of getting a sample statistic of [value] or more extreme by chance alone." Never call the p-value the probability that Ho is true!
Save 25 full minutes for FRQ #6 (The Investigative Task)
FRQ #6 is worth 25% of the entire Free Response section! It starts with familiar concepts in parts (a)-(b) and introduces a brand-new statistical rule in parts (c)-(d) to test whether you can connect ideas.

Inference Template Coaching
Paste your STATE-PLAN-DO-CONCLUDE writeup to check for missing context or parameter definitions.
Experimental Design (Random Assignment vs. Selection)
Know why random selection allows generalization to a population, while random assignment allows cause-and-effect.
Probability, Binomial & Normal Curves
Distinguish mutually exclusive vs. independent events and label normalcdf/binompdf parameters.
Linear Regression & Residual Plots
Interpret slope, y-intercept, R², and residual patterns in plain everyday context.
Never write calculator-speak ("normalcdf(10, 999, 12, 3)") without labeling inputs
AP Statistics graders deduct points for "naked calculator syntax." Always write out the normal distribution parameters (N(μ = 12, σ = 3)), sketch the shaded curve, or explicitly label lower, upper, mean, and SD.
