Why Using AI Isn't Enough
Most of your students already know how to use AI. They use ChatGPT to write jokes or Snapchat AI to chat with friends. But knowing how to press the button is not the same as understanding how the machine works.
AI Literacy is the ability to understand, use, and evaluate Artificial Intelligence tools critically. It is not about learning to code. It is about learning to be a pilot, not just a passenger.
As a teacher, you don't need to be a computer scientist to teach this. You just need to help students grasp three big ideas: prediction, bias, and hallucinations.
Concept 1: AI is a "Prediction Machine," Not a Magic Brain
Students often think AI is a super-smart robot that "knows" the truth. In reality, it is just a very powerful guesser.
The Explanation: Tell your students to think of AI like the autocomplete on their phone, but on steroids.
If you type "Happy Birthday to...", your phone predicts "You".
It doesn't know it's your birthday. It just knows that statistically, the word "You" usually follows "to" in that sentence.
Say this to your class:
"ChatGPT doesn't have a brain. It has a giant library of words. It reads the first word of your sentence and calculates which word is most likely to come next based on everything it has ever read."
Concept 2: Garbage In, Garbage Out (Bias)
AI learns from humans. And because humans are not perfect, AI is not perfect.
The Explanation: Imagine you taught an alien about Earth, but you only showed them movies from the 1950s. The alien would think that everyone wears suits and hats, and that nobody has a cell phone.
That is bias. If the training data we feed the AI is old, unfair, or limited, the AI's answers will be too.
Activity Idea: Ask an AI image generator to show you a "doctor." Count how many are men vs. women. Then ask for a "nurse." This usually sparks a great discussion about stereotypes.
Concept 3: AI Can "Hallucinate" (Lie)
This is the most dangerous part for students. Because AI sounds confident, students believe it.
The Explanation: Remind students that the AI is a Prediction Machine, not a Fact Machine. If it doesn't know the answer, it might just make up a sentence that sounds true because the words fit together well.
The Rule: "Trust but verify." Never use a fact from AI without checking it on Google or in a textbook.

You can test these skills with a simple game tomorrow:
Write: Have students write two true facts about a topic (e.g., The American Revolution).
Generate: Have them ask ChatGPT to generate a "fact" about the same topic that sounds real but is fake.
Guess: Read them to the class and see if students can spot the "Hallucination."
