Beating Procrastination:
Part 2 — The 5-Minute Rule

🎓Tutor IA de Estudio

Isaac Newton taught us that an object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion. Getting off the couch is the hardest part. Once you are actually moving, it's pretty easy to keep going.

Lowering the Bar 🧗

When a task feels too big, your brain gives up before it even tries. If you tell yourself "I need to write this entire 10-page paper right now," your brain will refuse. You have to trick your brain by making the goal pathetically small.

💡 Trick Your Brain

Tell yourself you are only going to work for 5 minutes, and then you are allowed to stop and watch Netflix. 90% of the time, once the 5 minutes are up, you'll just keep working because the hardest part—starting—is already over.

Action Steps

Follow this recipe to get moving.

1The Setup

  • Open the exact program or book you need (e.g., Microsoft Word, your math book) and leave it open.
  • Set a loud timer on your phone for exactly 5 minutes.
  • Promise yourself out loud: "I will stop working immediately when the timer goes off, no matter what."

2The Follow Through

  • Work on the absolute easiest, most mindless part of the task (like typing your name on the paper) until the timer rings.
  • When the timer rings, stand up and stretch. If you feel like continuing, set a new timer for 20 minutes.
