Vertech AcademyBeating Procrastination:
Part 1 — The Real Reason You Delay
Everyone thinks procrastination is about being lazy or having terrible time management. That is completely false.
Psychologists have proven that procrastination is a feelings problem, not a time problem. You aren't avoiding the essay because it takes 3 hours. You are avoiding the essay because the thought of writing it makes you feel stupid, bored, or anxious.
The Hot Stove 🍳
When you touch a hot stove, your brain instantly pulls your hand away because it hurts. Your brain does the exact same thing with homework. If a math assignment makes you feel dumb (pain), your brain instantly makes you open TikTok to escape the pain.
- The Escape Hatch: Scrolling through your phone isn't about having fun; it's an escape hatch from the uncomfortable feeling of not knowing how to start.
- The Guilt Spiral: Because you ran away, you feel guilty. That guilt makes you feel even worse, which makes you want to run away even more tomorrow.
💡 Name It to Tame It
If you can put a name on the specific bad feeling (e.g., "I'm overwhelmed," "I'm bored"), the feeling instantly loses half of its power over you.
Action Steps

Follow this recipe to deal with the feelings.
1Naming the Fear
- Grab a sticky note and write down exactly what you are feeling right now (e.g., "I am scared this essay will be bad").
- Say out loud: "I am putting this off because I feel scared, not because I don't have time."
- Throw away the sticky note into a trash can to symbolize letting go of that feeling.
2Breaking the Spiral
- Look in a mirror (or your phone selfie camera) and say: "I forgive myself for wasting time yesterday."
- Set a 2-minute timer on your phone and just stare at your blank document. Don't type anything. Just sit with the uncomfortable feeling.
