How AI Actually Answers
The AI isn't looking up answers. It's predicting them.
Most people think AI chatbots work like Google. You ask, it searches some giant database, it brings back "the answer."
That's not what's happening. At all.
Here's what's actually going on: An AI chatbot is a prediction machine. It read billions of pages of text โ books, articles, websites, conversations. From all that reading, it learned patterns: which words tend to follow which words, in which situations.
When you send a prompt, the AI isn't searching for your answer. It's predicting, word by word, what a good response to your exact text would look like.
It doesn't look it up.
It predicts it from your words.
"Peanut
butter
and"
"jelly."
Try this mental experiment. Finish the sentence:
"Peanut butter and ___"
You said "jelly." So would the AI. Not because it looked it up โ because that pattern appears everywhere in what it read.
That's the whole machine. Just at a massive scale.
Why this matters to you
The prediction is built from your prompt. Nothing else.
If your prompt says "explain taxes," the AI predicts what a generic explanation of taxes looks like โ because that's all it has to work with.
If your prompt says "explain taxes to a 22-year-old freelancer filing for the first time, using simple words," it predicts a completely different response. Same machine. Same knowledge. Different pattern to complete.
A lazy setup builds a generic prediction
"Explain taxes"
"Taxes are involuntary fees levied on individuals or corporations and enforced by a government entityโwhether local, regional or national..."
"Explain taxes to a 22-year-old freelancer using simple words"
"Since you're a freelancer, you are your own boss! That means nobody is withholding taxes from your paycheck automatically. You need to set aside about 25% of everything you earn..."
Your prompt isn't a question you throw at the AI. It's the setup the AI builds its entire answer from. Every word you include โ and every word you leave out โ shapes what comes back.
The Hidden Layer: System Prompts
There's one more piece to this puzzle. When you open ChatGPT or Claude, you aren't starting with a completely blank slate. Most companies build a hidden set of instructions into their AI before you even type your first word. This is called a System Prompt.
Think of the system prompt as the personality and base rules of the AI. It tells the AI how to behave, what tone to use, and what safety rules to follow.
Even if you give zero context, the AI still has an idea of how to answer because the system prompt is guiding it. Ultimately, what generates your final response is a combination of two things:
System Prompt + Your Prompt = Final Prediction
System Prompt
"You are a helpful, harmless, and honest assistant. Do not use harmful language."
Your Prompt
"Explain quantum physics."
Final Prediction
"Hello! I am happy to help you with that. Quantum physics is a branch of science that studies..."
Which raises an uncomfortable question: if the AI just completes the setup it's given... what does it do with a lazy setup?
Exactly what you'd expect. Let's look at that next.
